Technical description :

These plate filters can be equipped with the separator plate for double filtration. By using this plate you can simultaneously carry out pre-filtration and fine filtration! With double filtration, it is better to use cardboard filter plates and the operational time is frequently greater than with simple filtration.
By using the Moplen filter plate holders and the special rubber seals, the plate filter can be chemically sterilised and cleaned and sterilized.

Components :
E = inlet for the liquid to be filtered
U = outlet for the filtered liquid
UII = outlet for liquid filtered by double filtration
1 + 3 = header filter plate holders (only with double filtration)
2 = moplen plate for double filtration
4 = sealing cap for steam sterilisation gear
5 = sight-glass
6 = bleed valve + test cock
7 = manometer inlet + outlet
8 = filter plate holders
9 = header of the filter plate holders

Tips for use :

• After assembling the cardboard filter plates and before using the complete filter and cardboard filter plates, first flush with clean water for 10 – 20 minutes then disinfect, preferably with hot water at a maximum of 48 °C (inlet and outlet : see components) for 20 minutes, or by pumping through a disinfectant liquid such as pure alcohol or a permitted disinfectant for 10 – 20 minutes. Once again, flush through thoroughly with clean water to wash out any remnants.
• At the beginning of the filtration process, the first few litres of wine/beer are diluted with the remains of the flushing water. If desired, you can pour this wine/beer back into the tank of unfiltered liquid. You can see through the sight glass when the wine/beer is coming out undiluted.
• Depending on the head, the pump body may need to be primed. An unscrewable sealing cap is provided for the purpose. Obviously you must close it again and start the pump after filling.
• With double filtration it is difficult to determine the ratio of pre-filters to fine-filters. Experience will tell. We recommend a ratio of 1/3 pre-filters to 2/3 fine-filters. However, this is only an indication.
• With large batches you can, after a period of time, also back flush the filter discs with clean water in order to increase their operational time.
• After filtering, clean and flush out the entire unit thoroughly with clear water and let everything dry properly. Allow the pump body to discharge via the outlet at its base. Leave both the filling opening and the outlet open for a while so that all moisture can evaporate from the pump body. In this way you will avoid the growth of fungi in the pump body. Also leave all valves in the ‘open’ position.

Moplen (polypropylene) plate frames

and the chemical cleaning and sterilizing the filter

Moplen plate frames are a professional solution for the beverage filtration – they are sanitable chemically, usable for double filtration (coarse filtration +  micro filtration)

Moplen (polypropylene) is chemically resistant to most alkaline, neutral, and weakly acidic agents, but it is not resistant to strong oxidizing agents (e.g., concentrated hypochlorites or chromic acid).

Key considerations for sanitization include:

  • avoiding concentrated oxidizing agents
  • adhering to the recommended concentration of the sanitizing agent
  • always rinsing thoroughly with potable water after chemical sanitization

Recommended types of chemical agents :

The following can be used for the safe chemical sanitization of Moplen:

Hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂)
An active oxidizing agent that is gentle on polypropylene.
Recommended working concentration: 3–5% for standard disinfection.
Contact time: 10–20 minutes, depending on the manufacturer.

Citric acid
A weak organic acid, also suitable for removing limescale.
Recommended concentration: 0.5–2% solution.

Alkaline detergents (mildly alkaline)
Liquid detergents with a pH of 9–11, suitable for removing organic soils. Can be usd at warm temperature (max. 40°C), but unsuitable for high concentrations.
Examples: DeLaval Dish Cleaner or Foam Cleaner.
Dosage: 0.5–3% solution (5–30 ml/l of water), depending on the level of soiling. Quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs)

Broad-spectrum disinfectant suitable for food-contact surfaces.
Recommended concentration: according to manufacturer instructions (typically 0.1–0.5% working solution).
Thorough mechanical cleaning is required prior to using QACs.

Chemical sanitization procedure

  1. First, mechanically clean the filter to remove dust and coarse debris; optionally, shortly rinse with water at a maximum temperature of 90°C.
  2. Prepare the sanitizing working solution exactly according to the manufacturer’s recommended concentration.
  3. Thoroughly wet the entire frame and filter surface with the sanitizing solution; the solution may be circulated or the filter immersed in it.
  4. Allow to act for the recommended time (usually 10–30 minutes).
  5. After the contact time has elapsed, rinse thoroughly with potable water (min. 5 L, depending on filter size) to remove any chemical residues.
  6. Allow the filter to dry completely; do not expose to high temperatures (>50°C) or direct sunlight.

Additional recommendations

  • Product rotation: During regular sanitization, it is advisable to alternate between types of disinfectants (e.g., H₂O₂ and QACs) to minimize microbial resistance.
  • Safety: Wear gloves and protective eyewear when handling sanitizing chemicals.
  • Material limitations: Do not use strong oxidizing agents, concentrated hypochlorites, perchloric acid, or chromic acid.
  • Effectiveness monitoring: Under operating conditions, it is recommended to keep a record of concentration and exposure time for hygiene control purposes.

Recommeded concentrates of liquids

Chemicals Permitted concentration / temperature Contact time Note
H₂O₂ / Warm water 3–5% / 40°C 50–60 min Safe for polypropylene
H₂O₂ / Hot water 3–5% / 90°C 10–12 min Sterilization
Citric acid 0.5–2% / 20°C 10–20 min Removes limescale
Alkaline detergents 0.5–3% / 40°C 10–30 min Removes fats and deposits
Quaternary ammonium compounds 0.1–0.5% / 20°C Per manufacturer’s instructions Surface disinfection
